The chapter titled the “Reading of Bookes” in Francis Meres'S 1598 Palladis Tamia offers two competing prescriptions for the allocation of readerly attention. The first suggests that too-close reading spoils some books: “As the s[c]ent of spices and flowers is more acceptable somewhat off then close to the nose: so there are some things that please, if they be lightly passed over; which being exactly looked into do loose their grace” (266v). The second reverses that logic by way of a fresh analogy: “Those things that live long, doe not soon spring up: so that worke which thou wouldst have alwaies to be read, ought to be throughly laboured in, and seriouslie scanned” (267r). On the face of it, Meres's book—a six-hundred-and-sixty-five-page-long compendium of moral and practical precepts, each cast in the repetitive syntax of the similitude—is evidently the first sort of text. At once dizzingly various and mind-numbingly repetitive, Palladis Tamia is a book to “be lightly passed over”—“scanned” in the modern, not the sixteenth-century, sense of the word. That is certainly the case today, when Palladis Tamia is known primarily for a single chapter, “A Comparative Discourse of Our English Poets, with the Greeke, Latine, and Italiane Poets,” Meres's pioneering survey of English Renaissance writing, and above all for a handful of sentences in that chapter, which offer a rare glimpse into the early career of William Shakespeare. “As the soule of Euphorbus was thought to live in Pythagoras: so the sweete wittie soule of Ovid lives in mellifluous and honytongued Shakespeare,” Meres declares. “As Epius Stolo said, that the Muses would speake with Plautus tongue, if they would speak Latin: so I say that the Muses would speak with Shakespeares fine filed phrase, if they would speake English” (281v, 282r).

This paper examines the impacts of the Northeast Interstate Dairy Compact (Compact) on the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program using an autoregressive-moving average (ARMA) model and data from Boston and Hartford. While the results for Boston indicate that the difference between the net fluid milk price paid by WIC program and the forecasted fluid milk price with no Compact in effect was not significant over the period of July 1997 to June 1998, the results for Hartford suggest that the net price paid by WIC was significantly greater than the forecasted price with no Compact in effect over the same period. A similar analysis of the changes in markups suggests that the increase in the net fluid milk price paid by the WIC program in Hartford was largely due to increased markups.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The incidence, clinical presentation, and outcome of transplant-associated malignant melanoma (MM) are discussed more fully in Chapter 26. Surveys on the incidence of transplant-associated MM are limited, but those available have described a range from no increased risk up to an 8-fold increase relative to the nontransplanted immunocompetent population. Donor-derived MM accounts for 28% of cases of donor-derived transplanted tumors, making this the most common type of transplanted metastatic disease in organ transplant recipients (OTR). Information on other forms of posttransplant MM is scarce, and data on the incidence, management, and course of metastatic MM in OTR are almost nonexistent (Figure 34.1). The staging of metastatic (stage IV) melanoma was revised in 2001, and is now delineated as summarized in Table 34.1. Treatment of posttransplant metastatic MM is directed by our experience in immunocompetent individuals, with the crucial added consideration of whether graft-preserving immunosuppression should be withdrawn or altered. Management of this difficult clinical problem is unlikely ever to be strictly protocol-driven given the current lack of a robust evidence base, but rather requires a careful balancing of many complex allograftand tumor-related factors, which is possible only through a multidisciplinary approach.
INCIDENCE AND PROGNOSIS OF METASTATIC MELANOMA IN OTR
Available literature suggests a very poor prognosis (62% mortality) for transplant recipients with a history of MM before transplantation who have a recurrence of MM after transplantation. Similarly, OTR with donor-derived MM have high mortality rates with a 5-year survival of only 5%.
